Flying Mission Academy Admissions Guide

Overview

The Flying Mission began as the personal vision of Dr. Malcolm McArthur OBE, FRCS. Through his work with the Scottish Livingstone Hospital, and later Princess Marina, he perceived the great advantage of air transport to service medical and mission work in rural areas of Botswana. In 1977 this vision became a reality and FM was formally constituted to help meet needs in desert areas. In 1980 it was registered as a charity in Botswana (NGO Number: CR 0603).

Flying Mission-Aircraft Maintenance Engineering Training School

FM–AMETS is the only Approved Training Organisation (ATO) in Aircraft Maintenance Engineering in Botswana. The institution offers a two year Diploma programme in the Science of Aircraft Maintenance Engineering majoring in Airframe, Powerplant & Avionics with a total of 270 credits. Moreover, the school offers training that has been accredited by the Botswana Qualifications Authority (BQA) and approved by the Civil Aviation Authority of Botswana (CAAB).

About the AMET Programme

The AME Training Programme Information

Aircraft Maintenance Engineering (AME) course of instruction consists of both theoretical and practical skills segments divided into nine interrelated study modules:

Basic Subjects (Mathematics, Physics, Air Regulations & Aerodynamics)

Fundamentals of Aircraft Maintenance

Aircraft Structures

Aircraft Maintenance Practices

Aircraft Systems

Helicopters

Powerplant

Aircraft Electrics/Avionics

Attachment to Approved Maintenance Organisations

On completion of classroom tutorials, to further enhance practical skills, in depth expertise, requisite knowledge and inculcate relevant attitudes students are sent on attachment to various AMOs. This helps to expose learners to the real work environment, maintenance procedures, processes and both quality and safety management systems undertaken by aircraft maintenance engineers to uphold aircraft airworthiness and comprehensive safety management system.

Upon successful completion of the AME programme, graduates qualify for Botswana Civil Aviation licensing examination process offered by the Civil Aviation Authority of Botswana. Attainment of the Aircraft Maintenance Engineering License is the foundation for all engineering ratings and licenses which are the gateway to the aircraft maintenance engineering profession.

Life Skills

Although the primary goal of the programme is to train potential aircraft maintenance engineers, FM–AMETS develops well-rounded individuals who are able to make a positive contribution to the society at large. During the students’ time at the school, they are taught life-skills to hone their attitude and character to enable them to adequately face the challenges of life outside of normal engineering duties. The life skills sessions covers the five primary dimensions of a person; the emotional part, the mental part, the physical part, the social part and the spiritual part.

FM-AMETS Qualification

Upon completing the two year diploma programme at FM–AMETS, graduates are adequately equipped to prepare for the Aircraft Maintenance Engineers Licence (AMEL) and ratings examinations conducted by the Civil Aviation Authority of Botswana (CAAB), or other International Civil Authority Organization (ICAO) Contracting State, for entry into the AME employment market with either Air Operators, Approved Maintenance Organisations (AMOs) or Maintenance Repair Organisations (MROs). Alternatively, graduates possess a strong foundation upon which to proceed to further study or advanced qualification.
