Purpose of the Role

To manage the mining operations of a shift, and ensure implementation of objectives within the framework of the mining department’s strategic plan, legal requirements, best mining engineering principles

Key Job Responsibilities

  • Interprets and implements the mining strategy for the section to meet the operation’s medium and long term plans.
  • Analyses hand-over reports, production performance and uses the outcome to develop a plan for the shift
  • Analyses Weekly trends at sectional level , assessing their possible impact on the mining strategy and takes appropriate action
  • Reviews current performance, takes cognisance of challenges and future plans and contributes to the development of a 3 month rolling plan, Ensuring efficient execution of the monthly tactical plan and highlighting them for incorporation into future plans
  • Implement and maintain tyre management practices in line with tyre mthered management strategy and uses information gathered in the implementation to add input to strategy
  • Develops and manages shift resources deployment strategy to optimise the efficiency of the section taking into account capability, availability and other constraints within the operation
  • Daily evaluates operational data to achieve optimal implementation ofweekly and monthly plans
  • Reviews and coordinates implementation of sectional standards to ensure alignment with requirements as set by the Mining engineer, recommending changes where appropriate
  • Manages production output and takes corrective action on deviations by liaison with fleet dispatchers to determine current performance and implementing alternative mining sequence / options and interventions (within plan) to overcome production challenges
  • Manages and coordinates operational and Maintenance activities (drilling, blasting, loading, hauling, pit services) making all decisions as the senior mining production official to ensure achievement of shift production targets
  • Oversees all working areas of the entire operation by over inspecting of working areas and equipment that have been inspected by Team Lead to ensure that they comply with the regulations and maintains records of such in statutory log books
  • Promotes an enabling environment to motivate and encourage the search for and trial of new ideas and technologies to enhance and improve the mining processes and efficiencies
  • Initiates, monitors and controls short term sectional projects to ensure attainment of desired results

Other Job Responsibilities

  • Coordinates and monitors the implementation of safety, health and environmental programs in area of responsibility taking cognisance of all legal requirements to continuously improve and sustain business performance 
  • Identifies and manages the implementation of and adherence to legal and corporate governance principles/requirements
  • Manages subordinates key effectiveness areas by setting, monitoring and reviewing performance and taking remedial action as necessary
  • Implements the departmental talent management initiatives by ensuring the right competence and effectiveness of manpower (capacity building) through developing and implementing career, localization/succession, training and development
  • Implements knowledge management principles through application of tools and methodologies to continuously improve and sustain business performance
  • Identifies and implements creative and innovative ideas to continuously improve and sustain business performance
  • Establishes and maintains effective relationships with all key stakeholders and partners to ensure achievement of business objectives

Education

  • Diploma in Mining Engineering or Equivalent

Experience

 Five (5) years post qualification mining experience including at least two (2) years at Team Lead or Supervisory Level.

Experience in Information and Systems Management will be considered as an added advantage.
